Doula of North America

The word "doula" comes from ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth.

Here's what to expect ...

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Perhaps you landed here by recommendation of a family we both know, or maybe we've yet to meet.  I'm excited to talk with you about your pregnancy and the benefits of having a doula!

Throughout history and in much of the world today, women support women through labor and birth, giving back rubs and providing continuous emotional support.  Husbands, Mothers, Fathers, Sisters and best friends might live out of town or simply new to this experience.  I help support the whole birth team with my experience as a sister, a mother, and a DONA certified birth doula.  I remember what you wanted to remember from your childbirth classes.  I have experience with all methods taught in Hampton Roads.  If you were not able take childbirth classes, that's ok, I am there explaining as needed along the way.

The Doula

Recognizes birth as a key experience the mother will remember all her life

Understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor

  • Assists the woman in preparing for and carrying out her plans for birth
  • Stays with the woman throughout the labor
  • Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint
  • Helps the woman get the information she needs to make informed decisions
  • Facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her partner and her clinical care providers
  • Perceives her role as nurturing and protecting the woman's memory of the birth experience
  • Encourages the woman's partner to participate at his/her comfort level

I believe that women are designed to give life.  We are all unique!  A wonderful birth to one woman, may be not ideal for another woman.  There are many ways to have a happy, healthy baby and I am here to support your way!
